The merchant who sells thirst-quenching pills is a well-known modern figure. (Perhaps even more prominent today than in 1943. The great advertising slogan "I haven't got time for the pain" has become a modern day motto.) Today we will explore the concept of "wasted time" which is introduced in Chapter XXI as a major theme/thesis of this book, and re-stated again here in Chapter XXIII.
